S/Ldr Maurice James Adam AFC 1908-1938

S/Ldr Maurice James Adam AFC was born at St Andrews in 1908 and was educated in his native town and at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. In 1929 he was granted a short service commission in the RAF,and afterwards a medium-service commission. He qualified at No1 F.TS. Netheravon, and served with No24 (Communications) Squadron and then with No11 and No60 (B) Squadron in India. He saw active service on the North-West Frontier and returned to England towards the end of 1935, when he was posted to the Experimental Section of the RAE at Farnborough. On June 30th 1937, he the Bristol Monoplane to a height of 53,937 feet setting a new World Altitude record.

He was killed in September 1938 when flight testing a Whitley Bomber from Farnborough.
